Conference and Family Everywhere this weekend!

So this week has been a fun one, that is for sure. We did lots of service this week and that was really nice helped the week go by really quickly. We showed up at a members house and said hey another member told us you might need help with some house work so we are here, and oh man did we have fun, we ripped up the carpet and padding and tack board, oh before all of that we moved the furniture. So that was fun.

OH Yeah Conference!!

The only talks I remember out on the frontal lobe of my mind is the Elder Jorg Klebingat

he was so good, he totally took his 1 opportunity to speak in conference and called out the whole church for being disobedient in some way or another. I loved it!!!

Quentin's talk in Priesthood was really good. I love that he said "If you delay getting married because you want to finish school or get a good job you are not showing sufficient enough faith." that was hilarious! I thought of all my mid-single friends in my last ward and how they were feeling when he said that. 

I like that President Monson is sticking to his guns about not announcing any temples, good for him! Dean M. Davies, cant remember for sure what he talked about, but I can distinctly remember having a prompting to go back and study his talk once I can, so I will be doing that as soon as I can. 

Hmmmm....As always every talk was good, the foreign language ones were difficult to pay attention to; 1-because I wanted to hear them talk in their own language and just let the spirit teach me, and 2- I thought we would have captions not a voice over. But it was still really cool to see that the church is letting everyone have that option now!!!

I got my toe nail partially removed on Friday, that was fun so I am still feeling that a little bit. So the whole in grown and hurt edges are going away so we shall see what it looks and feels like in 2 weeks when i go in to get the other toe removed. 

We went on a hike this morning, realized how out of shape I am even though I have lost a lot of weight, but that was really fun this morning. It was the comp, 4 sisters and myself, so it was all good. These pics are of what it look liked at the look out point (1600 ft ). 

An elder and 2 sisters and I are starting a weight lose competition where we are going to track % weight lose and the person that wins (loses most % of weight between now and the 9th of December ) will get 10 dollars from each of the other 3 that don't lose the most % of weight so we shall see how that goes for all of us. 

Thank you both for all that you do, I forgot my atonement study binder so I do not have my challenge for this week.

Hey! I met Anona's sister. So I walk into my Relief Society Presidents house to drop some stuff off and this guy says to me; "Is your name really Elder Sobczak (said it correctly)"!     I reply yes - he says do you have a brother named Austin? I was like yes. He was like that is crazy My wife's sister is married to Austin. So then in walked Ana Hardin and it was really wierd and cool, super small world. AWESOME!

Let Christ Be that Friend...

I learned the powerful effects of using the Atonement of Jesus Christ and how we can be made clean yesterday while at a painting project. So I went to go clean the paint bin and brushes, I forgot however to notice that we were using an Oil based paint, so when the paint hit the sink (and my hands) it was there to stay. I scrubbed and soaked and clean for probably a good 30-40 minutes, making sure to not let any one see the disaster that had been done. But then, when someone came to help, another person gave the appropriate tools to clean (Goo be Gone) within minutes and following the proper process the sink was back and shining brighter than before the paint had spilled on it. The lesson: sometimes, even doing all we can to get clean is not good enough, we must ask for help, use the proper tools and proper process, and then continue working just as hard to get clean. Then we must do all we can to stay clean. Let Christ be that friend who helps you become clean and shows you the way to become "white as wool" (Isaiah 1:18)

Oh man what a fun and crazy week....

On Saturday we showed up to help this member family pack up their double wide and help them to get on their way to Idaho. Well, it was us and the sisters and the moms sons who is not a member or just not active??? Anyways, after we got the boxes packed, well lets just say they used really big boxes, then packed them so that they weren't full, thus when we stacked stuff on top of them, no support, and they crushed and the wall of boxes fell over! So that was fun had to re stack the stuff. My companion cannot lift anything, so it was the son and myself lifting everything for 6.5 hours which was really fun, got a good work out in.

During the move we were loading out their master bedroom, and the dad was like everything  goes except the rug, the rug stays. We were like okay sounds good, he then says "Someone died in this house 2 years before we moved in so we keep the rug there. We started laughing because we all thought it was a joke. Nope it wasn't, he said that there is a giant brown stain on the carpet and a 93 year old man died there, and then said "I will leave the rest up to your imagination", so that was crazy. They just did double sided gorilla tape on the under side of the carpet instead of replacing the carpet. SO hopefully that is not a selling mishap ... hahaha!

To answer your question mom, yes there will be "Classes" in the celestial kingdom, no one really talks about it. It will not create contention however because people will be in a place where they are most comfortable. If there is contention then that is the state that they are in (Meaning a state of Hell. This happens when you know what you did that prevented you from being with God). So the people that we should aim to be are the Exalted beings, being with God in a family unit for eternity organizing worlds. We do not create matter for that cannot be created, we simply organize the matter that is already there. Hope that makes sense.   Deep Doctrine!  This is one reason we all need to study the scriptures diligently and read Good Books for better enlightenment and understanding.  Remember;  Doctrine Understood Changes Behavior!

Not to much else to report on. Still in the finding process, I feel like that has been my whole mission, finding people, not to much investigator teaching. I am pretty sure in my setting apart President Bartlett blessed me with the ability to be happy.... oh wait nope that is in my PB blessing telling me to avoid discouragement, that is true and I must because trust me if I didn't have that direction then this mission experience would suck because I have every right to be discouraged :(

Serve and Forget yourself!

Sept 15th ...

Sorry not to much to report on from this past week. My companion is getting moved so that should be interesting to see how this next week ends up. We had a cool experience on Saturday where we went to go help this member family unload their daughters stuff into a storage unit because she and her husband are moving into the area and don't have a house yet so they needed to store their stuff. 

That only took about an hour, and after her we noticed this one lady, not having any help, unloading a 26' budget truck (the kind that have a super high tail gate and heavy ramp ) well she couldn't get the ramp out herself because of the weight, we went over and asked if we could help, and she was like "oh you know I have help coming at 11:00" (It is 10:30) so we were like how about we help until 11 when your help shows up?!!!
well wouldn't you know it, people are lame and her help never showed up, so we helped her out til the job was done and it was a blast. 
We had a member lesson set for 12:00 but called the dad of the family and asked if he could help us, he glady came and said he would have much rather have done that service than of had a lesson, so it was so cool!!! The family that we had helped from 9:30 to 10:30, well the dad and son came over and help from around 11:00 until 11:30 /11:45 so that was cool too, and we got 3 other elders to come and help and we got her whole truck un packed and storage unit loaded in about 3 hours, it was so awesome to see how the opportunity to serve and be served ended up blessing everyone that day.

Service Atonement and Teaching

Again, not to much to report on from this last week. The companion is going okay, lots of stuff going on but I don't want to bag on it to much. Uhm....We are teaching members and that is fun! Always a awesome chance to be in the members home and get to know them and who they are and how they got to where they are. 

“O ye that embark in the service of God, see that ye serve him will all your heart, might, mind and strength, that ye may stand blameless before God at the last day.” Doctrine & Covenants 4:2

Uhm...We had a service project this morning, we are in the process of pulling a stump out of the ground, it is a Palm stump that is about 2 feet in diameter and we have 4 shovels, a pick, 2 dull axes and a hack saw. So it will be a long process to get the thing removed out of the ground. But it should be fun, I miss doing manual yard work and stuff like that, something I am surprised that I miss from back home, actually getting to go out and work in the yard.

Yeah honestly cannot think of anything. You know whats crazy, I have 15 weeks left hahaha!!!  the only reason I know that is because I am starting my 15 week study of the atonement and so it will be done the day before I go home. Yeah, nothing else to report on ... parents, again sorry, I will work on taking better notes and bringing them with me to use when I write home this next week, I just don't have anything to report on really so I don't want to bore you with a break down of each day. I love you a lot, I really do, I truly appreciate all you do for me and all you do to help me out everyday.

Transfers Tomorrow I'm Outta Here! :( off to a New and Different Area

From July 28th

 -- It has been a really good one and as always, love being out here on the mission. 

This has just started week 6 so this coming Saturday will be the day we find out if i stay in Newport First ward another transfer or if i get moved around. I am hoping to be staying here in the ward again, I really love it and I feel like there is still stuff to do out here that isn't finished yet so we shall see what happens this coming week.

Church yesterday was really good. In PEC we were talking about how to get Home and Visiting teaching up and help the members realize the importance of it. One guy (the HPGL) said just to pull everyones recommends that are not currently doing home teaching/coming to their meetings. A little harsh I thought but understandable amidst the frustration. Then we came to the idea of why don't we just put up a list of everyones home and visiting teachers so everyone can see who they are supposed to be taught by and everyone knows who they are supposed to teach and post the list outside the chapel for everyone to see. So we all loved the idea of this and it will be implemented this next Sunday, I am excited to see what will happen in regards to this and if this actually gets people up and moving and working on a problem that clearly has a huge down play in all wards in the church, every ward I have served in has low home and visiting teaching reports so who knows maybe this works, maybe it lights the fire underneath some people. I love the accountably of it all.

Other than that no real cool stories at all to share with the family. We are doing great, I love it out here. It is exciting to see the Lord working in my life so that through me he can help other of His children that are in need of help. I hope you all have a great week ahead. 4 August ....

So Sadly today I report;

•  I am getting transferred...
• also sadly my companion is as well. Yep! they are moving both of us and bringing in two different elders to fill our spot. We are pretty bummed and sad and so is the ward. Church yesterday was a really sad day. Six months in a ward and you really come to love the people and feel part of their family.
• Another thing that is upsetting is for the last 6 months I have been here not one ward activity, nothing. :( Guess what? in a week and a half they are having their annual ward summer party...  :( Super sad, but whatever!  I have realized that the Lord puts you where he needs you when he needs you and for how long he needs you so this is all part of the plan and we need to just accept it and move on.  Nothing I can do about it and it cannot really change at all. 
• The week has been a good. We taught more than normal which was fun and made the week go by really quickly which is a blessing in disguise because week 6 usually goes by really slow so it was nice to see it go by quickly. 

We had a really cool missionary themed fireside last night with members from the stake and it was really nice. President Orgill and President Silve (Stake President) talked and the mission choir sang, so good.  Anyways so it was a fun experience to get go to that and listen and just feel of the spirit. I think that is the most interesting thing being out here, I have grown to truly notice the Spirit when I have it and when i do not have it, it is an interesting thing and hopefully something i can continue to develop and keep as i go home.

Another cool thing that happened at church yesterday was a lady came up to us and she said "I forgot to get money out (She usually gives us $5 every time we see her) and she was like I'll will just double it next week". We responded with "oh it's no problem but we wont be here next week we are getting transferred".  Gotta love Newport and the giving attitude the people have and the fact they give and help out here so much. So that was just an interesting thing, not something I will miss, but it has been a blessing because it always helped out in the long run, tender mercies and lots of blessings, all of us should continue to give, what goes around comes around. DO SERVICE, whatever you can when YOU can.

Service, gods and Moving on a mission Here and at Home!

Dang, as of today I have about 6 months and a week left...isn't it crazy how fast time goes, especially when you are busy and doing things recording my voice on tape for the parents!

There is not to much to report on from this last week. We met these people on Saturday who we helped move in, count 'em ... we have helped a total of 4 families move this week, so that is exciting sure felt like I was helping you without actually being there so glad to hear it all went well.

Anyways, the people we helped were really appreciative and we got their number and have been in contact with them since then and are looking at doing a dinner with them in the next week or two. They are moving here from Irvine and are really awesome people, it will be interesting to see how they react to us inviting them to take the lessons, because as you know that is what we do, as much as I want to  just be their friend, I know the Gospel will help them more than I ever could, so it needs to be introduced and brought up. The guy and his brother make these Snow/Surf Boards which are really cool. Basically what it is is a surf board pint in the front and a snowboard rounded back end and you ride it controlling with your back foot like how you ride a surf board. My companion and I are going to attempt to get one or get a discount on one so I have something to use when i get back to Washington and go to the slopes with Pops!

 

We did exchanges this week with the assistants, it was really fun. I stayed here in my area and went with Elder Schumacher. Some lady as we were attempting to contact her told us to stop where we were and then held out a can of pepper spray at us. So that was a first! Latter in the day we walked by these guys and this one guy was like get the "f" away from my car (I was walking on the sidewalk) so I step back trying to still talk to him. Then  he points to my keys that i have hooked to my belt and he told me to get further back because he has a "F"ing nice car that is limited (Its like a 5 year old Mercedes Sedan) and that he didn't want me keying it. Then told Elder Schumacher and I that we needed to stop what we were doing and go get laid, its Summer time thats what you should be doing, not out walking around. So that is the state the world is in these days, thats what we are up against being out on the mission!

Anyways, not to much else to report on, I have a short time today as I have to be somewhere around 1:20.  I love you so much, got the box and everything is awesome. Really appreciate again all you do and the money you sacrifice to help me out, hope I can help you out like this one day. Hope everything is going well and looking forward to a really good last 6 months and to see miracles happen.

What A WEEK!

Oh man, what a fun fun week hahaha!   

Lets see, to report on from this week, the biggest thing was this last friday we got called in to do a service project and well, it went for 14 hours. We started at 8:30 in the morning and then went until 10:00 at night. We had to help move a non member out of her house and move her into a apartment which was just insane. It is a long story but basically she got divorced, had to move out in that day and so that is what we did. TWO U- haul fill ups and then up to the 2nd story at the new place. We finished the move at about 8:30 and then we had to help put all the furniture together, so that took up the next,  oh hour or so ... but hey we got to help her out and gave her some good feelings about the mormons!  that is always good when we do that.

So the next day Saturday was a pretty tired day, but you know we kept doing the work. So that move is the reason you got a picture of my comps and I in service clothes, not on a Prep Day.

Lets see, Sunday we taught Elder's Quorum which was really fun, I always like teaching the classes, not much else about that.

So my thumb is doing much better, the picture doesn't really let you see it but its going good. Long story short i had a missionary stick a red hot heated sharpened hanger into my wart to try and kill it and burn it from the inside out. So it hurt pretty bad but hey it worked I think, we shall see in the next couple weeks as it heals over, pretty sure I am going to have a scar where the wart used to be as I am pretty sure I gave myself 2nd or 3rd degree burn with this thing I did. Don't worry I am telling you so I am obviously fine hahaha! Yikes!!!

Last night we had the departing dinner for Elder Tietjen so that is done, it was such a good dinner and we all had a really good time.

One last story, we went last night to a missionaries apartment after the dinner to pic something up and the gate guard asked me for my name so I said Rick, instead of Amric cause I hate having to go through the whole what did you say how to spell it thing!  but then he asked me for my last name, was not expecting that one so i was like "oh...uhm...It's Travis" hahaha!   so my new name if I ever get famous and have to create a fake name it is Rick Travis hahaha! note  picture of the gate pass.

Not to much else to report on, I am doing all good. I got the packages thank you so much. Everything is awesome and helps with the work. Love the beanie haha laughed really hard when I pulled that out of the box. The suit will look even better once I get it tailored, going next week to get the pants hemmed and tapered and also have the suit coat taken in so it isn't as big on me, so once all of that is done I will have 2 good fitting suit coats and 4 pairs of good fitting suit pants. I have found out a couple things about myself out on the mission, the main thing is that I really like slim pants haha so when i get home I will be wearing weird color slim pants, bring some of California with me wherever I go.

BAPTISMS and SEAHAWKS!

Hey hey family what is up!!! Oh man has this week been an interesting one. It's really just been an exciting one! The really Big thing to update you on is the baptism of the Gonzales family which was so cool!

The baptism was on the 25th of January so last Saturday and guess what...?
We filled the chapel with people. You would think it was a Sunday service of a small ward or branch it was so cool to see how many people showed up, just great awesome support from the ward.
Jesse the dad baptized all of them and then on Sunday I got to stand in the circle as they got confirmed, one of the Elders Confirmed Skylynn and the Home teachers Ken Bailey and Don Sand confirmed Christian and Carrie.  It was cool for Brother Bailey as he converted 4 years ago so he didn't get to confirm either of his kids as they were 14 and 10 when he got baptized and so that was his first confirmation, and guess what his oldest daughter Katherine was giving her mission farewell yesterday as well, so she got to see her dad confirm someone before she left. So all in all a very spiritual experience Saturday and Sunday. It was very cool to be a paret of all of it and see it go from start to finish.

In other news, well there is not to much in other news. The mission is going good. Work is back to the ground level and it is time to pick it up.

Cool to see all of the stuff about the Gilbert Temple. They are telling people here to go to that, seeing as how it is about 5 hours away from Mission Viejo ... haha you could have come to see me haha! or not!

Jan 20 ...

Hey hey there Family!!! How is everything going for you?? Today should be a better email than what I have done as It is MLK Day so no one else is really in the Library so here we go...

When we are baptized we make covenants

The Gonzalez Family had there baptism interview on Saturday which went really well. Carrie showed up and as soon as she came in she was like - oh man "I need to pay my tithing!" and went and grabbed a slip and was like I will just give this to bishop the next time I see him.

Tithe is 10% of your increase

Super awesome how she and Jesse are already committing to that and doing it...SO AWESOME they are so ready for all of this. They are in the final week now before the baptism which is making me stress out a little bit, but I know the whole ward is praying for them and they are committed which makes my worries go away.

Elder Madsen and I will have the opportunity to confirm them members of the church...yeah it should be really exciting. I have truly come to love this family and to see the change they have made these past three months, it has been amazing. It has been an honor to work with and teach them and to have them teach me as well. Saturday Starts the time line and then in one year they will be able to go to the temple to be sealed as a family for time and all eternity which they are super excited for. Hopefully I get back here...{Actually if I extend past Christmas I would still be on my mission when they hit their year mark...Actually...it would be the last week of my mission...hmm sorry that thought just hit me}. Anyways so they are doing great and are getting ready to make this step and covenant with the Lord.

 

This last week we also had the opportunity to stop by our friends the Pipitone's Sal and Joe...such and awesome couple. They are in their 80's and are kind of like my mission grandparents. Not members, we got their name off of a referral and we stopped by and they said we were an answer to their prayers and we were angels. They love us and we love them. She (Joe) wants to write us a check because of all we have done for them in this time of need for them. They are just awesome and are an old Catholic Italian couple. So that is them, keep them in your prayers, Sal is battling Leukemia is doing good, but can always use the prayers and thoughts. I mentioned to her that Elder Madsen and I could get moved away and she almost starting crying and said she was going to call President Orgill and tell him he had to keep me here hahaha! so we should see how that goes.

I guess I wore them out!

This past weekend was Stake Conference which was very missionary minded..very missionary minded. They showed tons of clips from the Hastening the Work of Salvation tab on Mormon.org which made it a little more interactive. The Stake President, said the members need to have the missionaries over weekly to have the discussions taught in their home. So that is awesome, and we already have members who are taking that challenge up.

 

The Dunhams have become in the top 3 of favorite families I have met on my mission. Die hard Seahawks fans and love the missionaries. Their son and I have become good friends, and they invited us to come to the baptism of their youngest daughter Paisley on the 1st February. I have gotten pretty close with them and love them dearly...and they give me all the sporting updates and we already have plans Parker and I to watch the superbowl next year when I am not a missionary hahaha!

The work out here is going awesome!!! I love being a missionary and everything is starting to come together. It has been a blast learning all that is out there. Friday we had a 6 hour training from brethren from the Proselyting Division of the missionary department in SLC. Quick notes from that ... Ipads should be coming within next 3-5 months... hopefully he said, anyways he was going to recommend our mission to get them. 90 million people in the US want to meet with missionaries of that 9 million said they would get baptized this week. They just Don't know where to find us or are confused by the craftiness of men. We learned a new way to teach the first couple of lessons which should greatly increase our effectivity as we teach. 

All is all awesome things are happening. My favorite scriptures as of right now are in 

1.   NT 2nd Cor. 9:6

 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall ^areap also sparingly; and he which ^bsoweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.

 and 

2.   2nd Nephi 9:50-52 

50 Come, my brethren, every one that ^athirsteth, come ye to the^bwaters; and he that hath no ^cmoney, come buy and eat; yea, come buy wine and milk without money and without price.51 Wherefore, do not spend money for that which is of no worth, nor your ^alabor for that which cannot ^bsatisfy. Hearken diligently unto me, and remember the words which I have spoken; and come unto the Holy One of Israel, and ^cfeast upon that which perisheth not, neither can be corrupted, and let your soul delight in fatness. 52 Behold, my beloved brethren, remember the words of your God; pray unto him continually by day, and give ^athanks unto his holy name by night. Let your hearts ^brejoice.
